Fibro Guys

A Social Network for Men with Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue or Pain

Sometimes it may be an accident or injury. in my case, it was a year of high-stress. I had multiple problems w/ my employer, found a new job in a different state, & moved our family. My chronic pain started about 5-6 months later.

Looking back, what triggered or caused your fibro?

Well with me the Dr. said it could have been a number a things from heat stroke in the Army in 1985 to the 5 deer I've managed to hit or any thing in between. I suffered for about a year then found out what was wrong. Didn't want to tell anyone because at that time I thought it was only women that had Fibro. Now I know I'm not alone. Have a pain free day.

Hi,

My Fibro and CFS started after my return from the Gulfwar.  Migraines, insomia, and IBS flaired about the

same time.  Their are multiple theories on why this occured. I have moved from wondering why, to how can I

combat these issues.

In my case it started with excessive typing on computers. I was a programmer then, couldn't escape that. It started with burning pain in the neck and then turned into mid back discomfort, and then some more...

I am not sure if there were other stressors but it just spread. I do believe quite a bit of my pain was from myofascial pain but therapy around it never worked...A doctor once told me that  isolating your triggering factor may not necessarily give them a treatment modality, except that you could deal with it...I am not sure I concur with her but she may be right!

All in all, it must have taken about 4-5 years for it acquire its current state of severity...I feel its progressive...

Btw, I did put out a survey for muscular pain related to FM and it had questions related to onset...will put out the result once enough members have taken it..

mine began exactly one week after i got married.  My father also died.  i was under alot of stress.  I also got a very large tattoo on my back during that time and I also quit eating gluten exactly one month before my symptoms started.  I had always clenched my jaw before that but never had any chronic pain.  Mine began as a twinge in my lower back that would come and go.  After about three months, the pain began to spread.  It spread to the other side of my lower back and down into my hips and glutes where it now resides 24/7.  I think that there are a bunch of factors and when they come together simultainously, fibro is triggered.

fibro has been in my famly for many generation my grandma had, my mom has it and we do believe my great grandma had it, I  am the frist male in the family that has had it. Most of my life i have not been able to eat anything with wheat in it. Wheat make my depression and anger very hard to control. Wheat does have an effect on how I fell and how I hurt. I had fibro most of my life but until about 15 years ago we knew nothing about it, at that time is when my mom was is a car wreck and she turn  for she saw the car coming, and the seatbelt pulled her shoulder  back and twisted her back, after that she was diagnos with fibro, as we learned more and more about, i could see the symptoms in me i have had pain in my body all my life, as far back as i can remember. (to many fibro fogs to remember most of my past)when my family started and taking care of my grandparents my gradma was diagnos with fibro, about  10 years ago. So It does run in the family that is were i received fibro. ( Something i wish would not be handed down from generation to generations). Thanks for listening

Mine started after I had my C-section in august. It started out mild so I thought it was just left over pain from the surgery. Then it got worse and worse so I went to my doctor and they diagnosed me with fibromyalgia.
The most recent issue of the "J of Rheumatology" published the first research dealing with a genetic basis for fibromyalgia.   Here is a link to the abstract:  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21406495

Mine came on slowly so it's hard to say though I have often speculated on it.

1. Sever trauma that nearly cost me my arm and required a number of surgeries.

2. Stress?  Possibly... my last two jobs were training what I knew would eventually be my replacements and I had a child who was seriously ill and required a transplant.

3. Physical abuse as a child.

4. Antibiotics given after item #1.   They pumped me full of them via IV for weeks so save my arm and possibly my life.  I never really felt the same afterwards and I think they may have effected my immune system.  Could have also been the various other medications as well.

5.   Sleep, or lack thereof.   I have never really slept soundly, in part due to #3.  I wake up at the first sound and it takes me 30 minutes or more to get back to sleep.  Always has.  My wife on the other hand falls asleep literally as her head hits the pillow.

6. Sleep apnea?   Possible, they say I have it but I kinda doubt it was the root cause but rather one that has since occurred due to reduction in exercise, weight gain due to years on prednisone and Lyrica.

If I had to guess one, I'd have to say it had something to do with nearly loosing my arm.  Whether due to stress, medications or sleep issues that resulted after the accident.

DA

Spinal Disc herniation C5-C7, then symptoms got much worse after a disc fusion.

I've always had sleep issues and I've had mild pain symptoms since my late twenties.

My symptoms got much worse in 2008 which was a very stressful year for  me.  I was self-employed with multiple clients and was too busy but afraid to drop any clients because of the housing collapse (my work was in the home furnishings installation field).  In August of that year my work van broke down and was in the shop for a week and a half to have the transmission rebuilt again (the new seals had been from a faulty batch).  Meanwhile I was trying to get my installation work done out of my 4 door sedan or with a rented van if needed.  I remember that I never felt quite the same after that week and a half.

My symptoms have slowly and steadily worsened since then.  I was diagnosed in December of 2008 and the diagnosis confirmed by a Rhuematologist February of 2009.
