About me:
Retired after 30 years. Happily married with two grown up daughters who are now working in their jobs of choice after completing university. Roles have reversed now as I am the househusband and my wife continues to work. I enjoy every moment and strive to be active. I find I am busier now than when I worked at a job and time seems to fly by. Both of us love travel and adventure. Fibromyalgia is the greatest hindrance but I do my best to focus on activities and place pain in the background. Brain fog and memory come into play but I find it helps when I use a little humor when experiencing these symptoms, which can be quite disconcerting at times. The greatest hazard when constantly dealing with pain, which includes explanations to those who don't understand, is depression. It is the hardest thing to deal with when sharing and communication are hindered and activities nearly always include pain, restrictions and limitations. I am fortunate because my wife is there for me and understands and supports me, particularly when I feel down and out. She provides lots of encouragement. I am a lucky man.
Relationship status?
Married
Do you have fibromyalgia? If so, for how long?
During the last 10 years my symptoms worsened and forced me to retire. I believe I have had fibromyalgia most of my life, but was officially diagnosed about 3 years ago after doing my own research and connecting the dots. I then requested my family doctor to send me to a specialist that confirmed I was correct. For years prior to my diagnosis doctors tested and treated specific symptoms which didn't help me very much. Just knowing what I have has been peace of mind because before being correctly diagnosed I thought I was dying from something as symptoms worsened.
What is your current treatment protocol? Supplements?
I take 20mg of paxil along with a blood pressure medication, 150mg ranitidine to control stomach upset and vitamin d (long winters, less sun). Then every other day I take a B-complex vitamin and a multivitamin. I find what helps me most is exercising, losing weight and eating healthy meals. I gradually built myself up to one hour of exercise per day (aerobics, stretching & some weights) but occasionally I skip a day if the pain is too great. At night I take Zopiclone 7.5mg to sleep often with a product called Brilliance (brain activity enhancer purchased at Costco) which I find helps to eliminate nightmares which I get from the Zopiclone. If I have severe muscle pain upon going to bed I take an OxycodonedHCL/Acetaminophen 5/325 and that guarantees I can sleep throughout the night otherwise even with the sleeping pill I would be awake from pain. I usually wake up alert and refreshed and then I eat cereal and head to do my exercises before taking a shower. I am allergic to aspirin so I can't take muscle relaxants which have aspirin in it. I found if an area of the body was constantly sore that an injection into that muscle of pain killer and cortisone healed it for a long period of time. My last injection was into a horribly painful upper back muscle and it hasn't bothered me for over a year now. I don't take these injections often but when I do they have helped me greatly. I also make a point of moving a lot during the day which I find helps keep the pain down.
Favorite activities/hobbies?
Walking, hiking, camping, snowshoeing, photography, research, yard work, gardening and cooking.
Favorite music?
Relaxing music .....my kids would call it elevator music. I enjoy country western and the golden oldies and sometimes just relaxing to the sounds of nature.
Favorite TV shows/movies?
History channel, informational shows, action and movies with a good story or action plot usually coupled with humor. I also like science fiction.
Favorite books?
Travel, cooking, camping and humor. I use the library a lot to gather reference material.

I have to take some time away to be a caregiver of my mother, she has alzheimers and in the nursing home. I have spent several months trying to get her on medicaid. I plan to go back in the spring quarter.

I had a 7 year old male lab/sharpie  dog. I take him for small walks or I should say he takes me for the walks. lol

The weather has always played tricks on me. I usually can tell when it is going to rain. Heat is the worse.

I also keep active by working on my FB fibro group. We have over 100 men there. A very caring group.

I came here, to see how you guys deal with fibro.
